The Improving Operational Performance framework incorporates three pathways (Performing Engineering Operations Level 2, Performing Manufacturing Operations Level 2 and Business Improvement Techniques Level 2) that equip apprentices with the basic skills and knowledge to carry out a range of engineering and manufacturing processes at semi-skilled and operator level. The Business Improvement Techniques pathway ensures that business processes are planned and executed as efficiently as possible, identifying and, minimising waste whilst ensuring the highest quality.

Role Profile

The Improving Operational Performance framework incorporates three pathways (Performing Engineering Operations Level 2, Performing Manufacturing Operations Level 2 and Business Improvement Techniques Level 2) that equip apprentices with the basic skills and knowledge to carry out a range of engineering and manufacturing processes at semi-skilled and operator level. The Business Improvement Techniques pathway ensures that business processes are planned and executed as efficiently as possible, identifying and, minimising waste whilst ensuring the highest quality.

All learners will complete both on and off the job training elements for this framework and at the end of their programme will not only complete their Level 2 Apprenticeship in Improving Operational Performance, but will also gain a Level 2 Diploma in Business Improvement Techniques along with a Level 2 Certificate in Improving Business Performance. Dependent upon prior qualifications learner’s may also need to complete functional skills in English and Mathematics to a minimum of Level 1.

For the off the job training element it is compulsory that learners attend centre to achieve knowledge, understanding and competence training. This begins with a 3 day induction covering the principles of apprenticeships and Induction to Programme, this then moves onto block days off the job throughout the 18 month programme covering the following subjects:

  • Team Formation, Self Development & Change Management
  • Project Management
  • Kaizen Principles
  • Problem Solving Techniques
  • Process Mapping
  • Workplace Organisation & Visual Management
  • Standard Operating Procedures
  • Lean Tools & their Applications
  • Lean Six Sigma Foundation
  • Lean Six Sigma Yellow Belt

For the Level 2 Diploma in Business Improvement Techniques learners have to complete the following subjects and are then able to select from subjects specific to their individual requirements, qualification requirements and correlation to their job role:

  • Complying with Statutory Regulations &
  • Organisational Safety Requirements
  • Leading Effective Teams
  • Applying Workplace Organisational Techniques
  • Applying Continuous Improvement Techniques (Kaizen) 
  • Developing Visual Management Systems
  • Carrying Out Problem Solving Activities

Optional Units are then picked then as per individual requirements

For the Level 2 Certificate in Improving Business Performance learners have to complete the following subjects:
